Photo Scrapbook - Hintertux Glacier, 10-06

Above:
Gorgeous mountains in the Ober Salzburg region as seen from the
Eagle's Nest near the Koenig See on the German/Austrian border on
the way from Munich to the Hintertux Glacier. We went to the
region to produce a Mountain Folk special in honor of the start of
the new ski season in 2006! You can listen to that show in our
audio library!

Above:
One of the most gorgeous summit crosses we've ever viewed rests at
the top of the Eagle's Nest on the German-Austrian Border.

Above:
The front face of the Hintertux Glacier. This is the "groomed" run
that drops you a thousand feet or so from the high plateau down
toward one of the upper huts.

Above:
Skiing on the glacier in October is great. Many race teams and
clubs from around the world gather here to begin early season race
training. This photo was taken on the western edge of the
glacier and if you look at the wall beyond, the lateral (side)
moraine (edge) of the glacier can be clearly seen. The glacier
has carved an almost smooth edge through the rocky mountains here.

Above:
When you get out of the final gondola car and exit the hut, this is
the site you see at the top of the glacier, some 13,000+ feet above
sea level.

Above:
Take a short rest and then blast down thousands of vertical feet of
pure glacier snow and ice!

Above:
Even when it's not winter elsewhere, it's still winter on the "Tux"
and you get to pick your way down between crevasses, blue ice and
fresh powder!

Above:
Looking out over one of the upper ski-able portions of the glacier
one can see the field of crevasses strewn far below.

Above:
Welcome to the realm of the mountains where the fire of the sun
meets the ice of glacier!

Above:
Check out the glacier-fed lake in the valley far below!

Above:
Yup...sure don't want to ski into that crevass!

Above:
Enjoy the world-famous apres' ski scene and the fabulous
gemutlichkeit that can only be found in Austria!

Above:
Cheers, prost...here's to the glacier and its mountains!

Above:
Tux...Tux...Hintertux! This is the chant and place that lures
skiers from around the world! Come on...the new ski season has
begun!
